Covenants between God and Man: Adamic, Noahic, Abrahamic, Mosaic, Davidic, New
Covenant = “An agreement which brings about a relationship of commitment between God and his people.” It is not a contract. It is an intimate relationship with God based on a promise.
Also, think about Old Testament types and their fulfillments in Christ.
Adamic Covenant
God gives everything to Adam and Eve.
Be fruitful and multiply, have dominion over all the earth, and eat from any tree.
May not eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil or they will die.
Fruit of the tree of life is a type of the Eucharist.
Noahic Covenant
Build Ark (is a type of the Church).
Flood washes away all evil on earth (is a type of baptism).
Noah and family saved by the flood.
God promises to never flood the entire earth again.
Abrahamic Covenant
Circumcision (is a type of Baptism).
Abram to Abraham.
Son Isaac, grandson Jacob (Israel) (is a type of the Church).
Israel has twelve sons (are types of the Twelve Apostles).
Twelve sons were patriarchs of the Twelve Tribes.
Mosaic Covenant
Moses sees Israel’s enslavement (analogous to sin).
God intervenes and tells Moses to demand Israel’s freedom.
Pharaoh refuses.
Plagues begin.
Passover.
Pharaoh frees Israelites.
Israelites cross Red Sea.
Red Sea kills Pharaohs army (evil washed away by water; type of baptism).
Israelites wander in the desert (analogous to our earthly journey).
God gives Moses 10 Commandments.
Israelites disobey God and worship golden calf.
Wander in desert for 40 years as punishment and then complain about it.
Many bitten by snakes and died.
Copper snake on pole (is a type of the crucified Christ; Jn 3:14).
The thing on the pole looks like the thing killing the Israelites.
The Person on the Cross looks like the thing killing us…ourselves.
If bitten, one must look up and gaze upon the copper snake to be saved.
Manna (Exodus 16, is a type of the Eucharist).
Rock of water (Jesus Christ; Num 20:1-13; 1 Cor 10:4).
Promised land (Canaan).
Passover perpetually celebrated with spotless lamb (Ex 12:14, 17; is a type of Christ, our true Passover Lamb).
